British beach “bonus holidays” on the rise

Luxury Family Hotels report that they have tripled in last five years

Parents are taking full advantage of the school holidays by not only booking an annual summer trip abroad but also a ‘bonus holiday’ in the UK, according to a UK leading hotel group.

These ‘Bonus Breaks’ are an extra holiday taken in the UK, typically lasting around five days and are situated around the British coastline, with hot spots including Cornwall and Devon.

Adrian Burley, Marketing Director, Luxury Family Hotels, says: “Often, it’s the core family who do the big summer trip abroad, while the ‘bonus breaks’ involve members of the wider family, other families and also friends.

The school summer holidays are at least six weeks long and we are noticing a really strong increase in this second break holiday.  Parents regularly tell us that they opted to have a second summer holiday in the form of a UK break, away from home and all the day to day chores, so that they can extend that holiday feeling for as long as possible before September ‘back to normality’ kicks in.

Luxury Family Hotels report that both their Fowey Hall and Polurrian Bay hotels in Cornwall have become popular with the ‘Bonus Break’ set, given that they are perfectly placed to experience the British holidays many of the parents experienced when they were growing up, giving them a sense of nostalgia and a chance to share childhood memories with their offspring.

Hermione Norris, star of ITV’s Cold Feet, recently visited Fowey Hall Hotel in Cornwall with her family.  She said: “When I was young it was Cornwall, Wales and Devon for family holidays…..A week in the UK with sandy sandwiches, building dens, free entertainment with a bucket and spade, Cornish pasties and family chaos.  It was a lovely, wholesome experience. And I want that for my own children.

Adrian Burley adds: “With Cornwall there’s so much to do on the doorstep and the area also provide a great base for families to enjoy the annual events that the region does so well.

Cornwall spotlight: Fowey to enjoy all chic Cornwall has to offer

Fowey Hall Hotel

Fowey Hall Hotel is perched above the pretty sailing town of Fowey on the south Cornish coast and commands sweeping views over its estuary, port and out to sea.   A grand Queen Anne mansion thought to be the original inspiration for Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows, its welcoming, unpretentious atmosphere makes it feel more like a friend’s country retreat, where kids can roam freely and parents can unwind.

With the sandy cove at Readymoney beach just a short walk away, and wonderful woodland and coastal walks all around, Fowey Hall makes the perfect location for a relaxing family break by the sea. Guests will love the urbane style of Fowey itself with its lovely boutiques, cafes and pretty streets.
